I second the Nicole Merlin article, I use this in my responsive templates. Another thing I did when I started digging into code was to use the Scope It tool litmus has and see how other people are coding the emails in my inbox. What is the deal? Has anyone else been using this without issues?
Look into MailChimp, they have affordable plans depending on subscriber count, and they have intuitive template features that you could build out a few for them and they could use the WYSIWIG to fill in their own content.
