Make email better—in London!

The Email Design Conference brings the email community together to celebrate their craft and give marketers and designers a platform to learn, share, and grow.

Free from product pitches and meaningless hype, we’re all about content: teaching designers, marketers, and strategists how to produce emails that look great, perform well, and engage audiences.

With sessions covering innovative email development techniques, responsive email design, content creation, testing strategy, production processes, and more, you’ll take away tips and techniques that have immediate impact.

    A Type of Accessibility

Paul Airy | Beyond the Envelope

Developing accessible emails is a challenge, particularly when the email and webmail clients force us to employ the use of HTML tables for layout, alongside other ‘non-semantic’ techniques. In this talk, Paul calls us to look beyond those challenges, and, with the help of HTML typography, make email more accessible.

    • Punched card coding: advanced interactive techniques
    • Static, limited, and interactive email clients: what works where?

Turning Big Data into Intimate Moments

    Alex Timlin | Emarsys

Big Data means big opportunities to create little moments your customers will love. Creating personalized experiences at scale is the key to surviving in a competitive landscape. How can you use Big Data to create intimate and memorable experiences? And how can you create these intimate moments at scale?

When applied properly Big Data isn't creepy. Truly understanding your customers can be the thing that helps your brand rise above the noise. In this talk Alex Timlin will show you how to blend big data and creativity to bridge the gap between the Data Scientist and the Marketer to create campaigns that make a personal impact.

  • 9:40 - 10:20

Going International: How to Localize Your Campaigns

    Elliot Ross | Action Rocket
    Jaina Mistry | Padawan Group

Are you missing the opportunity to go global? When more than 70% of the world’s 2.3 billion Internet users are not native English speakers—and 85% of Internet users don't make purchasing decisions unless they can access information in their native language, relying on English for all your messaging may be holding you back.

We’ll provide practical tips and real‑world examples to help you solve design challenges, address code considerations, and learn the techniques for sending localized campaigns.

    Email Production at Scale

    Alex Ilhan | display block

    • How to rapidly produce high quality responsive emails
    • Streamlining your email builds
    • Managing snippets with version control
    • Tools for your email production process

Five Emails Every Business Needs to Send After Signup

    Alan O'Rourke | WorkCompass

You’ve got the right product. You’ve attracted the right audience. You’ve even convinced them to sign up; giving you their email address. But what does it take to convert them to a paying customer? In this session, Alan O’Rourke will share the actions a user must take (and the emails we must send) that lead to an AH-HA moment—the moment a user realises the value of a service, become hooked, and have no problem paying for that value.

  • 11:50 - 12:50

  • 1:00 - 1:40

    Live Optimization Session

Beat the post-lunch urge to take a nap with this session packed with plenty of A/B testing suggestions, quick wins, optimization tips, and other advice to take back to the office. Attendees can submit their emails for review, soliciting tips from the audience and our speakers. It promises to be fun, fast-paced and full of insight.

Shorthand Coding: Write Twice the Amount of Code in Half the Time

    Kevin Mandeville | Litmus

Writing HTML and CSS for email is incredibly time-consuming, tedious, and, well—painful. If you're writing code by hand, you're wasting a lot of your valuable time. Learn how to leverage shorthand coding to cut your development time in half. We'll review how to use Emmet, code snippets, and more shortcuts to supercharge our email development workflow and process using any popular editors (Dreamweaver, Sublime, Atom, Coda, Litmus Builder, etc.).

  • 2:40 - 3:20

    Responsive Email Without Media Queries

    Fabio Carneiro | MailChimp

Developing email that’s flexible enough to adapt to the large number of clients that exist—new and old—can be a challenge. Some clients, like Microsoft Outlook, have outdated and poor-performing rendering engines. Others, like Gmail, have user bases that can’t be ignored, but render emails terribly.

In this talk, Fabio will cover the concepts of Spongy Development (a.k.a Hybrid Coding) and Pattern-based Design (a.k.a Atomic Design), and show how the tandem use of both methods can result in robust, flexibly-built emails that perform well and are “responsive” across a variety of clients without relying on media queries or other modern development techniques.

  • 3:20 - 4:00

    Email Speed Dating

Improve your campaigns and get 1:1 time with the speakers. Snag a seat at their tables ask questions, get feedback, and geek out.

  • 4:00 - 4:40

    Does Your Subject Line Suck?

    Parry Malm | Phrasee

When most marketers pick a subject line, they either 1) trust their gut; or 2) follow the status quo. Both of these strategies are suboptimal. So what’s an #emailgeek to do? In this presentation, Parry will show you why the emotional power of your subject lines is what matters, and how to use actual statistics to answer the age old question: “Does my subject line suck… and how can I make it better?”

  • 4:40 - 5:00
