What are the biggest challenges when first tackling email design and development?
There have been a few discussions about getting started in email design & development, most recently here. As more people are exposed to email and realize the value of sending better campaigns, I thought it'd be a good idea to collect everyone's thoughts on the biggest problems facing noobs and the best resources for tackling those problems.
So, what are some of the hardest parts of getting started in email and how'd you overcome them?
Whether it's relearning how to code if you're coming from the web side, understanding permissions, dealing with testing, or figuring out the legal issues, drop them in the comments below.
Oh, and shameless plug: we're tackling a bit of this in an upcoming webinar. Check it out.
For me, the biggest challenge was "relearning" how to code. Prior to email marketing, my background was mostly in website development, so my first emails were coded like webpages (so embarrassing to look back at them now). It took a lot of re-education and testing to get my coding skills in email-ready shape. Now, I'm so focused on coding for email, I think it would be doubly hard to go back to website coding!
Morning Erin. It was interesting to read your post as I am running a presentation tomorrow which will cover elements of coding for email. We are a creative agency in London and I am a member of the over arching front end dev team (although, like you, work solely on email production now).
Am looking forward to seeing how they embrace email code and the growing number of tools at our displosal now! : )
