I have an email template that Outlook seems to be inserting a pink background into.

I have a background applied to the <th> — with the requisite Outlook backup — with a grey fallback background colour. The <h1> is set to white with no background set. Everything works except for the versions of Outlook that use the Word rendering engine. Here, until images are set to display, a hot pink background colour appears.

This pink does not appear anywhere in my markup so I'm assuming that Outlook is inserting it.

I've tried applying the background to the <h1> itself rather than the table cell — but with the same results.

Has anyone come across something similar?

I've pasted the relevant markup below. Thanks!

<table width="685" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" bgcolor="FFFFFF" style="margin-bottom: 10px;">

<thead height="60" bgcolor="#686869">
<tr height="60">
<th background="http://www.urbanliving.com/img/emailTemplate/headerBG_690x100_REV.jpg" width="685" height="60" valign="top">
<!--[if gte mso 9]>
<v:rect xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" fill="true" stroke="false" style="width:685px;height:60px;">
<v:fill type="tile" src="http://www.urbanliving.com/img/emailTemplate/headerBG_IE.jpg" color="686869" />
<v:textbox inset="0,0,0,0">
<![endif]-->
<div>
<h1 style="height:60px; color: #ffffff; font-family: arial; line-height: 55px; text-align: center; margin: 0; font-weight: normal; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 40px; letter-spacing: 2px; background: none transparent;">New Developments</h1>
