Is image mapping making a comeback? I've seen some companies that have been using this, since their emails are very image heavy. Is there better support for this now?

This is a good read about image mapping. Although the article is from 2011, I do not believe many email clients have made changes to anything that would affect their support for image mapping. (Other than Gmail now displaying images by default.)
