Why would alt tags not show in an emai? Is there a character count with alt tags in email? My shorter alt tags show, but the longer ones don't.

It's been my experience that when the ALT text character count exceeds the width of the container table width for the image, that the ALT text will be cut off.
In other words, it depends on how wide the image is. You can also try styling the ALT text to increase/decrease the font size in supported browsers/clients:
