Best Position for 'View Online' and 'Unsubscribe' Links
So, all our email campaigns come with the standard "Forward to a Friend | View Online | Unsubscribe", Normally we have view online and forward at the top center, unsubscribe then the agency branding at the bottom.
The latest site I'm building for however we're taking advantage of a new header design and we don't really have room for the stuff at the top, so thinking all 3 at the bottom...
What's everyones idea on this?
Thanks!
Normally I would have the 'view online' at the top, but I've seen emails with that at the bottom. I think it is fine to have it at the bottom of the email along with everything else you mentioned. I know some emails don't include the 'view online' at all. Which I think comes down to personal opinion and whether or not your subscribers are clicking on the link. We normally have a few who do and that is why we keep it in.
Sometimes an email will not render properly, so it's better to put the view online link on top. This also helps with accessibility.
Unsubscribe links are generally placed at the bottom of an email to discourage people from clicking on it, although on rare occasions some emails I get have it placed at the top.
If forwarding is a prominent part of your campaign it shouldn't be in the header or the footer where it is likely to be ignored. Place it in the body with a prominent CTA.
Check your metrics! If people rarely click Forward to a Friend or View Online, it isn't worth giving it top billing in my opinion.
I think Unsubscribe at the bottom is now considered a norm – I wouldn't put an unsubscribe at the top unless I was running a re-engagement campaign to try to reduce being marked as spam.
'View Online' is always a high-performing link for the campaigns that I run; almost to a perplexing level. Like other said, check your metrics. If it's a popular link, I wouldn't move it to the bottom.
