Mobile Opens Hit Record High of 47%

Mobile opens hit a plateau from May through July, but August saw a 3% leap and mobile opens now represent 47% of market share—a new record high, and nearly a 24% change since a year ago. In response, desktop and webmail clients have dipped slightly; with desktop opens at 32% and webmail at 21%.

The biggest—and only—change in the top ten clients this month is Android’s swap with Apple Mail for the #4 spot. iPhone still dominates in the #1 spot, seeing nearly a quarter of all opens, and more than half of mobile opens. With it’s move to the #4 spot, Android now represents 20% of mobile opens and 9% of opens overall. iPad opens round out the mobile pie with the last quarter of opens.

When will mobile hit 50%?

Last August, mobile opens accounted for 38% of all opens, but by December that figure had increased to 43%: a 13% change. If last year’s trend is any indication, another 13% increase between August and December this year would put mobile opens at 53% by year end!

Are Gmail opens still dropping?

There’s still a lot of concern surrounding the May release of the tabbed inbox. Last month, we revealed that only 19% of people with @gmail.com address actually open messages in the Gmail web interface, and less than half of Gmail opens occur in email clients that support the tabs.

We continue to see small decreases in Gmail opens through August, with another two-tenths of a percentage point loss, or a 5% change.
