iPad Opens Grown 49% in 12 Months; Total Mobile Email Opens Back to 43%

The top ten email clients in February remained unchanged from last month, with Apple, Outlook and Android dominating the top five.

All platforms returned to December levels, with mobile at 43%, desktop at 32% and webmail at 25%.

The minor fall in mobile opens after December was likely linked to consumers returning to their desks and playing catch-up after the holidays. Now that life is back to normal, I expect the trend of gradual increases in mobile opens to continue throughout the next several months.

In the past year, iPhone has seen a 39% increase in opens and iPad has grown 49%. Combined, iOS represents over a third of all opens. While growth has been steady for both devices, iPad has seen a slightly faster rate of change, starting at 7% a year ago.

Unsurprisingly, iOS 6 (the most recent version of Apple’s mobile operating system that runs on iPhones and iPads), has the largest share with 86%, while iOS 5 has the next largest share at 10%.
