Can I use Email Analytics with ExactTarget templates?
Yes. When you’re working with the template inside ExactTarget, there are a couple different ways that you can go about inserting the tracking code. The easiest and least error-prone way to do so would be to choose an empty content area inside your template.
If you don’t have any spare content areas in your template, you can also insert the code into a content area that already has content in it. To do this, you can open the content area inside ExactTarget, and navigate to the HTML tab. Put your cursor at the very end of all the code inside the content area, and paste the Litmus tracking code at the very bottom. Again, we recommend using a content area near the bottom of your template if possible.
There are a few things to keep in mind when using Litmus codes with a template in ExactTarget. After you insert the tracking code, Litmus will immediately begin to collect data off the hits that the tracking bug receives. Since the tracking bug works by loading an 1x1 pixel image (the same way that ExactTarget tracks opens), Litmus will receive information every time the email is loaded or previewed inside ExactTarget. For this reason, you might want to wait until your email is complete and tested before adding the tracking code. You’ll likely see several hits in Litmus after you insert the code - they may be labeled as “Web Version,” “Other” or occasionally “Outlook 2000-2003”. We're working on adding a way for customers to clear this preview data and “reset” codes directly in your Litmus account.
Also, any future emails created using "revised existing email" in ExactTarget will still contain the tracking code, so you’ll want to clear the tracking code from the content area if you plan to re-use the template in ExactTarget.
